STEEL SERI S
SHOCK
– RESISTING TOOL STEELS
·
Carbon content = 0.5 – 0.6%. Alloying
elements – Cr, W, Mo.
·
These are Characterized by good
toughness, hardness and improved hardenability. These steels are generally,
water or oil – hardened.
·
“Low temperature Tempering” is carried
out where, toughness and hardness of the tool steel are of prime importance,
otherwise “High Temperature Tempering” is preferred.
·
Sllicon – manganese steels (0.55% C,
2.0% Si, 1.0% MNn) are included in this group. Due to their high Si – content,
decarburization and grain coarsening takes place in these type of steels.

STEEL SERI S
SHOCK
RESISTING TOOL STEELS ( S – SERIES) :
- These steels have 0.45 to 0.55% carbon. The alloys, silicon, and nickel are ferrite strengtheners. Chromium increases wear resistance and hardenability. The S – series of tool steels ware originally developed for chisel – type applications, but the number of alloys in this category has evolved to include steels with a broad range of tool applications. This class of steels has a very good shock resistant qualities with excellent toughness.
- They are used in from tools, chisels, punches, cutting blades, springs, timming, and swaging dies, concrete and rock drills, bolt cutters.
